The NANOiDEF project researches and develops a portable system for rapid identification of biological threats directly in the field. Using third-generation nanopore sequencing (Oxford Nanopore MinION), portable computing devices, and artificial intelligence algorithms (AI/ML), the system reduces analysis time from days to 1–3 hours after sample collection. The research covers in-field optimization of nucleic-acid isolation (e.g., using PowerFecal-type kits), the design of a bioinformatic pipeline, and the integration of hardware and software into a functional all-in-one prototype.
Project results will be applicable in defense against biological weapons, military and peacekeeping operations, crisis management, identification of epidemic outbreaks, and complementary medical diagnostics, including the detection of genetically modified organisms.
The project is financially supported by the Ministry of Defense of the Slovak Republic.
